I have been doing animal rescue for over 20 years. In 2010 our rescue group was at the PetsMart Store doing adoptions, and it was the week before Chirstmas. It was a very busy day, we had many people looking at our animals. I had my cell phone in my pocket as I always do and it rang about 2 pm. I answered it, and it was a young man that told me he had rescued a dog from a very bad situation. He said she was very abused and he needed a place for her to go. Since we are very close to Flint Michigan, the pit bull capital of the world, I asked him if it was a pit bull. He told me it was. Our rescue does take in and help pit bulls and other breeds, but we were so full at that time and I could not see how I would find one more space to fit in a dog. I told him I could not take her at this time, but I would see what I could do about finding someone to take her.
As the day progressed, a woman came to us to adopt one of our puppies. She had adopted from us before and so she was approved to adopt this dog. As I was completing the adoption, she asked me if we would accept a donation. I of course said yes. She wrote out a check and handed it to me, and it was for $1000. With our little rescue group, $1000 was like a million to us. All of our volunteers were so happy, we could not believe it.
I Kept Thinking About the Pit Bull
It was a very good day, and as I was driving home with my animals in my van I kept thinking about the little abused pit bull. I decided that the $1000 was a sign, and I should take this little girl and find a place for her. If I had to, now I could afford to kennel her. So I called the young man on the phone and asked him if he still had this dog and he told me he did. I asked him to meet me at the gas station by my house and I would take her.
I drove up and he was there waiting for me. He was a young black man and I could tell that he was so grateful that I was taking this poor little girl. He opened the car door and out stepped the most pathetic creature I had seen in a long time. She was a walking skeleton, and she had tiny cuts all over her body from being used as a bait dog. Inspite of all of this, she was very gentle and sweet. She was mostly black with a small patch of white and she had one blue eye and one black eye. I took her home and she went into our kennel and she was so grateful to be there. She knew that she was safe, she had a warm place to sleep and all of the food she wanted. We decided to name her Jasmine. We took Jasmine to the vet and she was put on antibiotics. We also took care of the parasites infecting her body. About two weeks later, we had to have the tip of her tail removed because it was gangreen.
She is an Absolute Sweetheart
We soon learned that Jasmine was great with all other dogs, cats, people and kids. Here is a dog that has been so mistreated and yet she is so wonderful. She is one of those pit bulls that so many people are afraid of. Jasmine soon caught the heart of one of our volunteers and in a couple of months, they took her home and that is where she is today. She lives with three other dogs, kids and several cats.
