It wouldn’t be summer without a virtual visit to see Sasha Pesic’s shelter for 750 dogs in Serbia. Sasha knows most of the dogs by name almost instantly! He can tell you the journey each took before arriving at his shelter. He knows who is shy and who likes to play hard. But what Sasha remembers most of all is the time before Harmony Fund threw out a lifeline. He remembers what it was like on the days that he had nothing but stale bread to feed the dogs. Worse yet, he remembers the days there was nothing to feed them at all.
For the past several years, our monthly supporters have been the lifeblood of this shelter and help keep the dogs fed and healthy all year long. And now, we’re hoping for your help to create an annex to the shelter for the dogs who are in their twilight years and also for dogs with special needs.
For example, Majka and Aleksandra are mother and daughter dogs who have always been together, year after year. Sasha had a silent hope that they might one day find a home together, but now Majka has gone blind. Suddenly being blind in a shelter, in a large pack of free running dogs is very frightening. She withdraws in a bed of straw while her daughter goes to play and comes back for visits. The bond between these two dogs is so beautiful and it’s our intention to see that both of them are enjoying their lives. We want Majka to feel safe walking around each day without the business of the main shelter. The elderly and disabled members of the pack need their own space that is quiet and well attended and allows them to live peacefully.
The cost of this project is fairly modest and some funds have already been raised. Construction trailers will be used for housing and fencing will be erected to give these dogs a spacious area to socialize during the daytime. We’re seeking to raise about $1,250 more to help.
